Are you up for a bit of a challenge? Big Frog Mountain Trail is considered challenging because of its length and gradual elevation gain of a little over 2000 feet. We’ll go at a leisurely pace that will take us about eight hours. Avid hikers complete this hike in about five hours. Much of the trail is through a Rhododendron tree tunnel. Peeking through the changing leaves, you will enjoy ridge views of the southern Appalachians and valleys below.

If you choose, you can go part of the way, then turn around and come back. You can make this hike whatever you prefer, if you do not want to do the 11 miles.

Dr. Snoddy and Dr. Vance moved to Cleveland 40 years ago from Memphis and joined Broad Street shortly after moving here. They raised their three daughters here and started hiking in our nearby mountains, more and more over the years. The Big Frog Trail has been their “go-to” hike because it is a remote wilderness Trail that is accessible from Cleveland and has beautiful views and occasional wildlife sightings.

This photo is from their January 1 hike on Big Frog mountain. Another of their most recent hikes was the week before Christmas in Patagonia!

Things to bring: Wear comfortable hiking shoes and layered clothing for possible variation in the weather. Bring a small backpack or bag with water, snacks and a light lunch. Some people prefer using hiking sticks or poles - that is your choice, but good running or hiking shoes are a must.
